Land Acknowledgement

I live and work in Port Alberni on Vancouver Island, on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the Nuu-chah-nulth people. This includes the Hupačasath and Tseshaht First Nations, who continue to live here and care for these lands.

My relationship to the land

I’m a British settler who emigrated here in 2023 after falling in love with the stunning natural beauty of the island. I spend a lot of my free time outdoors either hiking, camping or doing a variety of water sports, and I honour the lands and waters around where I live by making sustainable choices wherever possible.

My ability to live here is a direct result of the colonisation and displacement of indigenous people, the impacts of which continue into the present. I’m actively learning about the Hupačasath and Tseshaht First Nations culture and governance in order to be a good guest and contribute positively to this community.
